Exploring Sodium-Ion Batteries: A Promising Alternative to Lithium-Ion Batteries

Ryu Shinoda, a renowned expert in the field of battery technology, has made significant contributions to the development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this article, we will delve into the world of SIBs and explore their potential as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

During the charge process, Sodium ions migrate to the hard carbon anode with increasing voltage. Figure 1 illustrates the typical configuration of a SIB coin cell, which consists of sodium layered transition metal oxide (Na xTMO2) as the cathode and hard carbon as the anode. The SIB system comprises five key components: the cathode, anode, membrane, electrolyte, and current collector.

Sodium-ion batteries have garnered considerable attention due to their potential to address the limitations of lithium-ion batteries. LIBs are beset by issues related to resource constraints, rising costs, and environmental concerns. In contrast, SIBs offer a more sustainable option with abundant sodium resources available globally. The cost-effectiveness of SIBs is further underscored by the ability to replace copper foil with cheaper aluminum foil for anode current collectors.

The development of SIBs has been rapid, driven by the growing demand for large-scale energy storage applications. Researchers have focused on improving electrochemical performance, such as high rate capability and long cycling stability. Sodium layered transition metal oxides (Na xTMO2) have emerged as promising Na-ion cathode materials due to their low cost and high theoretical capacity.
