Research has long established that regular physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being, particularly during adolescence. In the Czech Republic, a recent study aimed to develop sex- and age-specific normative-referenced percentile values for health-related fitness among 12-to-18-year-old youth.

The researchers found that girls had higher flexibility compared to boys, which is an important indicator of overall physical fitness. The study used a range of assessments, including the 20-meter shuttle run test, modified push-ups, and V sit-and-reach test, to evaluate cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility respectively.

Boys consistently outperformed girls in tests of cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular strength/endurance, while girls demonstrated higher flexibility scores. Interestingly, the study also found that most measures of health-related fitness increased with age among girls, except for the sum of skinfolds, which remained stable from 12 to 18 years old.
